The name ‘Cinderbury’ is a conjoining of two elements of ancient place names: Cinder – denoting an area of land where there were cinders or slag deposits from ancient iron smelting e.g. Cinderford
and Bury – a fortified settlement e.g. Uleybury, Cadbury, Welshbury. The main premise behind the project lies in telling the story of the early Forest of Dean iron industry using evidence from locally excavated examples, such as Frocester Court, nr. Dursley and potentially, Edge Farm at High Woolaston.
In a secondary role it will give visitors a real ‘taste’ of Iron Age life – not a passive walk round some glass-cased museum but a chance to witness and be involved with the life of our own ancestors.
