Cinderbury as an Educational Centre

School Visits

School parties will make up a major element of income, as is evident from the experiences of other Living History projects. There will be liaison with Gloucestershire LEA and local teachers, at both primary and secondary levels. Cinderbury will provide a programme with themes commensurate to the current National Curriculum.

Cinderbury will provide an exciting learning experience through a series of hands-on activities, such as making pots, grinding wheat using a quern stone, and casting their own alloy jewelry, that the children will remember far longer than a passive walking tour of the site.

The experience gained from the local Young Archaeologists Club (YAC) will be invaluable here, and Cinderbury will benefit hugely from its Director’s key role in the recent past of organising hands-on activities for YAC meetings.

Higher Education

There has already been a great deal of interest from students in Higher Education, at degree level and beyond, in taking part in the Cinderbury project, through such courses as described above, or by working on site. They will have a unique opportunity to enhance their own learning experience and understanding through practical awareness of the realities of Iron Age life, after spending time at Cinderbury.

As well as interest from the archaeological community, discussions have taken place to include an element of vocational training for students taking Travel and Tourism qualifications at Royal Forest of Dean College. Other potential opportunities include a variety of Adult Continuing Education (ACET) courses.

Dean Archaeological Group and Young Archaeologists Club

Cinderbury will serve as a central base for the working researches and study activities of both Dean Archaeological Group and the Dean & Chepstow branch of the Young Archaeologists Club. It will provide a stimulating and apposite location for enhancing the experiences of all club members. Jasper Blake, Director of the Cinderbury project is Director of Archaeology for DAG and branch leader for the YAC.
